Update: Unlimited Hyperbole is no longer available. There are two episodes preserved by the Thief community on Youtube which are linked in the episode index, however other episodes have since been lost to time.
Ben Mansell is not anyone you know, but he’s someone I know very well. In fact, one of my earliest memories is of him on the playground of our primary school, his eyes greedily devouring the manual for his favourite game, Doom. In the 20-something years since, very little has changed.
In the final episode of Season One, Unlimited Hyperbole investigates Ben’s belief that Doom is a literally perfect game, his efforts to share it with the people he loves and the perceived fall of ID Software as interpreted through changing attitudes in level design.
Unlimited Hyperbole is a weekly podcast about videogames and the stories we tell about them. The show is divided into seasons of five episodes, each with a topic that’s used as a prompt when interviewing special guests. This season we’ve been talking about “My Favourite Game” – but that’ll all be changing soon…
So.
The first season of the show draws to a close and, to be honest, I’m kind of amazed. Launching my own podcast, let alone such an intensively edited and structured one, was a complete adventure for me and my initial plan was just to do five episodes and close. As it is, I’m hard at work on Season Two and the show has been more popular than I ever imagined.
Naturally, I want to thank everyone who’s supported and appeared on the show to date, as well as everyone who’s written us iTunes reviews, spoken about us on forums or Twitter and helped get the word out. Harriet and I have invested a lot of time and energy in the show, so seeing that people like it is the best reward there is.
As for Season Two, we’ll be taking a one-week break before the launch of that, just so we can be sure everything will run smoothly afterwards. When we return on July 9th we’ll have a new panel of guests lined up, a new theme to discuss and background music which hopefully won’t make so many people want to kill themselves when they hear it.
The theme for Season Two will be: ‘Fear Itself’ – and we hope you’ll all continue to listen when the time comes.
Tell me what you think…
