Unlimited Hyperbole #6

Update: Unlimited Hyperbole is no longer available. There are two episodes preserved by the Thief community on Youtube which are linked in the episode index, however other episodes have since been lost to time.

When discussing fear in games, it’s almost impossible to ignore the shadow cast by The Shalebridge Cradle, the infamously chilling mission from 2004’s Thief: Deadly Shadows. So, what better way to start Season Two than by  talking to RPS co-founder and comics writer Kieron Gillen to tackle that topic directly?

Discussing Shalebridge with Unlimited Hyperbole, Kieron talks about how Deadly Shadows evolved throughout development, the inspiration behind the level’s approach to fear and the best thing he’s ever accomplished as a games journalist.

Unlimited Hyperbole is a weekly podcast about videogames and the stories we tell about them. The show is divided into seasons of five episodes, each with a topic that’s used as a prompt when interviewing special guests. This season we’re talking about “Fear Itself” – but for more information about the podcast itself, read after the jump.

So.

There’s a couple of things to note about this episode. Firstly, yes, it does contain a few minor spoilers about the level in question – but the game came out eight years ago now, so get over it. Secondly, yes, the level does assume a certain level of familiarity with the Thief series – both because we’ve covered it before and also because I didn’t want to weigh the episode down with backstory. Also, Thief’s a great game and if this gives you a reason to play it then …good.

Outside of this individual episode, one of the things I’ve been thinking about lately is how the show is distributed. The Soundcloud integration that’s currently in place is excellent on the back-end, but there’s been little feedback about how it works for listeners and I’ve seen a few episodes uploaded to Youtube, suggesting there’s at least some demand for new channels. If  there’s a way you think we can improve the show or if you’d rather have them on Youtube or any other platform, we’d love for you to tell us.

The other reason that the topic of distribution has been on my mind is because Unlimited Hyperbole has been a launch partner for FeedTheRobot.net recently – a new site by Craig ‘Episode 2’ Lager and David ‘When Can I Be On The Show?’ Brown. You should check it out and appreciate the background art that Harriet did for the site.

Right now I’m going to get back to work on the next episode, but don’t forget that you can review the show on iTunes, follow Harriet and I on Twitter and contact us with feedback about the show through the contact page or comments below.

Thanks to everyone who spoke to me at Rezzed about liking the show

  2. The Thief series is one of my all time favourites, the developers at Looking Glass and Ion Storm Austin were brilliant, I miss them… Thanks for these great podcasts!

Also, I think this link should be here: http://gillen.cream.org/thecradle.pdf :) This level is much like Clive Barker’s Undying, no matter how many times I played through the lelev/game before, it still scares and creeps me out. And I love watching videos on youtube of people playing through it the first time. :)

    1. Hi William,

The Thief series are indeed amazing – I used to love playing them when I was just starting to get serious about games. Kieron’s Cradle feature is actually embedded in the Soundcloud comments, but you’re right – it’s an absolutely amazing article!
